Río Grande, Tierra del Fuego's largest city, sits on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Río Grande — one of the world's premier sea-run brown trout rivers. While the city is primarily industrial (electronics assembly under tax incentives), the surrounding countryside is a fly-fishing paradise and offers unique steppe camping on the windswept eastern side of the island. For car campers, Río Grande serves as a resupply point and fishing base. The rivers radiating from the city — Río Grande, Río Menéndez, Río Fuego — hold trophy sea-run brown trout that attract anglers from around the globe. The flat, treeless coastal steppe is a stark contrast to the mountains around Ushuaia, offering a different but equally compelling Fuegian camping experience.

How good is the fishing really?

World-class. The Río Grande produces sea-run brown trout exceeding 10 kg. It's considered one of the planet's top five trout rivers. But it's catch-and-release and heavily regulated. Guides are recommended.

Do I need a fishing license?

Yes, a Tierra del Fuego provincial fishing license is mandatory. Available at tackle shops in Río Grande. Different categories exist for residents and foreigners. Some rivers require additional estancia permits.

How windy is Río Grande?

Some of the most extreme sustained winds on Earth. 60-80 km/h is routine. The flat steppe offers zero wind protection. Your tent and patience will be tested severely.

Is there anything besides fishing?

The Atlantic coast has historical sites (Misión Salesiana), sea lion colonies, and shipwrecks. The Fuegian steppe has a stark beauty. But fishing is the main draw for visitors.

Can I camp and fish without a guide?

Independent fishing is possible on public sections of rivers. However, the best pools are often on estancia land requiring guided access. Research access rights before your trip.
