Camping in Seven Lakes Route
The Seven Lakes Route (Ruta de los Siete Lagos) between San Martín de los Andes and Bariloche is Patagonia's most scenic drive. Camp beside seven stunning Andean lakes along 110 km of breathtaking road through Lanín and Nahuel Huapi national parks.
3 min readUpdated for 2025–2026 SeasonThe Ruta de los Siete Lagos (Seven Lakes Route) is arguably the most beautiful road in Argentina, connecting San Martín de los Andes to Villa La Angostura (and onward to Bariloche) through a chain of spectacular Andean lakes. For car campers, this 110 km stretch of Ruta 40 is a dream — each lake offers camping opportunities with different characters, from bustling organized campgrounds to secluded free sites. The route passes through both Lanín and Nahuel Huapi national parks, climbing mountain passes with panoramic viewpoints and descending to lakeside beaches. Rather than driving it in one shot, camping along the route lets you experience each lake's unique beauty at a relaxed pace. This is what car camping in Patagonia was made for.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many days should I spend on the route?
Minimum 2 nights camping to appreciate the lakes without rushing. Ideally 3-4 nights lets you swim, hike, and fish at different lakes. Driving it in one day means missing the point.
Is the road paved?
Mostly paved now, with some gravel sections remaining. All sections are accessible by 2WD. The road is winding and scenic — drive slowly and stop at viewpoints.
Which direction should I drive?
Either works. South to north (Bariloche to San Martín) gives you afternoon sun on the lakes for photography. North to south has a slight downhill advantage. Both are equally beautiful.
Can I swim in the lakes?
Yes! The lakes warm to 15-20°C in summer at the beaches. Lago Espejo and Lago Correntoso are particularly popular for swimming. The water is clean and safe.
Do free campgrounds fill up?
Yes, especially in January-February. Arrive before noon to secure a spot at popular free sites like Lago Machónico. Paid campgrounds are more reliable with reservations.
