Puerto Deseado, perched on the banks of the Ría Deseado estuary in Santa Cruz province, is one of Patagonia's hidden treasures and a frontier destination for adventurous car campers. Unlike the more famous wildlife sites to the north, Puerto Deseado remains gloriously off the beaten path, offering intimate encounters with Commerson's dolphins, rockhopper penguins, Magellanic penguins, and vast cormorant colonies without the crowds. The town sits where the Deseado River meets the Atlantic, creating a unique estuarine ecosystem. For car campers, the journey here is part of the adventure — long stretches of empty steppe, occasional guanaco herds, and the sense of reaching somewhere truly remote. Camping options are basic but the wildlife experiences are world-class and practically private.

Questions Frequentes

How do I see Commerson's dolphins?

Boat tours from Puerto Deseado's port offer close encounters with these beautiful dolphins in the estuary. They can also sometimes be spotted from shore near the port and along the ría. Tours run October-March.

Is the road to Puerto Deseado paved?

RN281 from the RN3 junction to Puerto Deseado is fully paved. Coastal tracks to remote beaches and Cabo Blanco are gravel or dirt, requiring high clearance and preferably 4x4.

Can I visit Isla Pingüino (Penguin Island)?

Yes, boat tours to Isla Pingüino run in summer and offer encounters with rockhopper penguins — the only mainland colony in Argentina. Book in advance as tours are weather-dependent.

How remote is the coastal camping?

Very remote. South of Puerto Deseado, you can drive for hours without seeing another person. This is frontier-level camping requiring full self-sufficiency and emergency preparedness.

Is there a petrified forest nearby?

Yes! The Bosque Petrificado Jaramillo, about 250 km south, has 150-million-year-old fossilized trees. It's a fascinating day trip or camping stop from Puerto Deseado.
