As the capital of Chile's Magallanes region, Punta Arenas is a gritty, wind-battered city that serves as a crucial hub for Patagonian exploration. Car camping from Punta Arenas opens up the Strait of Magellan coastline, the penguin reserves of Isla Magdalena's mainland counterparts, and the road south to Tierra del Fuego via the Primera Angostura ferry crossing. The surrounding landscape is defined by windswept grasslands, stunted lenga forests, and dramatic coastal cliffs. While the city itself is urban, campgrounds dot the outskirts and the roads heading north toward Torres del Paine or south toward Porvenir. Having a vehicle is essential here — distances are vast, public transport is limited, and the best camping spots require driving gravel roads through estancia country.
