Camping in Puerto Madryn
Puerto Madryn, gateway to Península Valdés and the whale-watching capital of Argentina, offers coastal camping with marine wildlife encounters. Drive your rental car to campsites overlooking beaches where southern right whales breach just offshore.
4 min readUpdated for 2025–2026 SeasonPuerto Madryn, on the shores of Golfo Nuevo in Chubut province, is Atlantic Patagonia's premier wildlife destination and an unexpected gem for car camping. While most visitors come for the whale watching (June-December), the region offers year-round camping appeal with its arid coastal landscapes, penguin colonies, sea lion reserves, and stunning desert beaches. Car camping here is fundamentally different from Andean Patagonia — instead of forests and mountains, you'll camp on windswept coastal bluffs, beside turquoise ocean bays, and in the scrubby steppe that stretches endlessly inland. A rental car is essential for exploring the vast Península Valdés and its scattered wildlife viewing points, making camping the most practical way to maximize your time in this unique marine wilderness.
