Camping in Puerto Río Tranquilo
Puerto Río Tranquilo, home of the world-famous Marble Caves on Lago General Carrera, offers car campers a Carretera Austral basecamp with glacial lake camping, ice cave excursions, and access to the Exploradores Glacier along one of Earth's most scenic drives.
4 min readUpdated for 2025–2026 SeasonPuerto Río Tranquilo is a small village on the western shore of Lago General Carrera that has become internationally famous for one thing: the Capillas de Mármol (Marble Caves), where millennia of wave action have sculpted swirling marble into cathedral-like caverns of blue and white. For car campers on the Carretera Austral, this is an essential stop. Beyond the caves, the area offers access to the Exploradores Glacier (via a 50 km gravel road), camping on the shores of the vast turquoise lake, and the raw scenery that defines this section of the Carretera Austral. The village has grown from a handful of houses to a functional tourist stop, but it retains its frontier character. Camping here puts you at the heart of the Carretera Austral experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I visit the Marble Caves?
Boat tours depart from the village waterfront, weather permitting. Kayak tours offer a more intimate experience. Morning light creates the most vivid blue reflections. Tours cancel in high wind — allow multiple days.
Can I drive to the Exploradores Glacier?
Drive 50 km to the road's end, then hike 1-2 hours to the glacier viewpoint. Guided ice trekking tours are available. The gravel road is rough but 2WD accessible in dry conditions.
Why is the lake so turquoise?
Glacial flour — fine rock particles ground by glaciers — is suspended in the water, scattering light to create the vivid turquoise color. It's most intense on sunny days.
Is there enough fuel?
The fuel station sometimes runs out in peak season. Fill up before arriving and carry a jerry can. The nearest reliable fuel is Coyhaique or Chile Chico.
How many nights should I camp here?
At least 2 nights — one for marble caves (weather dependent) and one for the glacier or lake exploration. Bad weather may require an extra day waiting for cave tour conditions.
