Puerto Williams, on Isla Navarino across the Beagle Channel from Ushuaia, holds the distinction of being the world's southernmost city. This tiny Chilean naval settlement is the jumping-off point for the Dientes de Navarino trek — one of the planet's most remote multi-day hikes — and represents the absolute frontier of car camping possibilities. While the island's road network is limited, a rental vehicle (available locally or brought by ferry) allows exploration of the Beagle Channel coast, the Ukika Yagán community, and the forest roads around town. Camping here is a badge of honor for adventurers — you are literally at the end of the road, with nothing but ocean between you and Antarctica.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Puerto Williams?

By small plane from Punta Arenas (DAP airline, 1.5 hours) or by the Tabsa ferry (32 hours). There's also a zodiac crossing from Ushuaia (seasonal, 1 hour). Book well in advance.

Can I bring a rental car?

Cars can come on the Tabsa ferry from Punta Arenas. Local car rental exists but is very limited. The island has about 40 km of road. A car is useful but not essential if you're mainly trekking.

How difficult is the Dientes de Navarino trek?

Very difficult. 4-5 days, unmarked in many sections, with bogs, river crossings, and extreme weather exposure. Only for experienced wilderness trekkers. GPS navigation skills are essential.

Is it colder than Ushuaia?

Similar temperatures but Puerto Williams feels wilder and more exposed. The lack of infrastructure means you feel the elements more intensely. Come prepared for genuinely harsh conditions.

What about the Yagán people?

The Yagán are the world's southernmost indigenous people. The community of Ukika near Puerto Williams preserves their heritage. The excellent Martín Gusinde museum in town tells their story.
