Otoño in Nahuel Huapi National Park

Nahuel Huapi National Park, established in 1934 as Argentina's first national park, encompasses over 700,000 hectares of Andean Patagonian landscape centered on the vast Lago Nahuel Huapi. With the city of Bariloche as its gateway, the park is Argentina's most visited natural area — except en otoño, when it becomes one of its most peaceful.

Autumn, from marzo through mayo, brings what is widely considered the park's most beautiful season. The native southern beech forests — lenga, ñire, and coigüe — undergo a transformation that ranks among the world's great follaje otoñal displays. The deciduous lenga and ñire trees turn vivid shades of crimson, scarlet, gold, and copper, while the evergreen coigüe provides dark green contrast. Reflected in the park's numerous turquoise and emerald lakes, the effect is stunning.

The park's geography ranges from the semi-arid steppe at its eastern boundary through temperate forests to glaciated peaks exceeding 3,000 meters, most notably Cerro Tronador (3,478m). This elevation range means el otoño color change progresses from higher to lower elevations over several weeks, extending the foliage season from late marzo into mayo.

Based in Bariloche, visitors can access an enormous variety of experiencia otoñals. The Circuito Chico paseo panorámico, Cerro Campanario chairlift, Isla Victoria excursión en bote, Cascada de los Cantaros trail, and the road to Cerro Tronador all offer distinctive otoño perspectives. The park's extensive sendero network — from easy lakeside walks to multi-day refugio circuits — is best enjoyed en otoño's cooler temperatures and reduced crowds.

Bariloche itself, with its famous chocolate shops, craft breweries, and lakeside restaurants, takes on a cozy character that perfectly complements the outdoor splendor.
