Río Turbio, Argentina's southwestern-most town, is a coal-mining settlement that rarely appears on tourist itineraries — which is precisely its appeal for adventurous car campers. Sitting in a sheltered valley surrounded by sub-Antarctic forest near the Chilean border, the town provides access to surprisingly beautiful and completely uncrowded camping in the foothills of the Andes. The nearby Valdelén ski area, the forested Turbio River valley, and the scenic border crossing to Puerto Natales (Chile) make it a worthy stop. For car campers doing a grand Patagonian circuit, Río Turbio offers an alternative border crossing route that avoids the long drive through Río Gallegos, connecting El Calafate directly to Torres del Paine.

Perguntas Frequentes

Can I cross to Puerto Natales from here?

Yes! The Dorotea/Laurita border crossing is just 10 km from Río Turbio, and Puerto Natales is only 40 km beyond. This shortcut avoids the 600+ km route via Río Gallegos. Check rental car cross-border policies.

What's at the Valdelén ski area in summer?

The ski area transforms into a hiking and mountain biking destination in summer. Forest trails, mountain viewpoints, and wildlife watching make it worth a visit.

Is the town depressing?

It's a working mining town, not a tourist resort. But the surrounding forest and mountains are genuinely beautiful, and the locals are warm and surprised by visitors. The nearby border crossing adds strategic value.

How is the road from El Calafate?

RN40 south from El Calafate to Río Turbio is mostly paved (about 270 km). The drive passes through open steppe with views of the Andes. Allow 3-4 hours.

Is there skiing in winter?

Yes, Valdelén has basic ski facilities. It's Argentina's southernmost ski area. Winter camping here requires serious cold-weather preparation with temperatures reaching -20°C.
