Puerto Varas, perched on the western shore of Lago Llanquihue in Chile's Los Lagos region, is one of South America's most picturesque lakeside towns. The combination of the snow-capped Osorno Volcano reflected in the lake, German colonial architecture, and lush temperate rainforest creates an idyllic car camping base. With a rental car, you can explore Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park (Chile's oldest), drive the scenic route around the lake, visit the Petrohué waterfalls, and access diverse campgrounds ranging from lakeside sites with volcano views to forest camps near hot springs. The region's mild climate by Patagonian standards and well-developed tourism infrastructure make it an excellent destination for campers of all experience levels.

Questions Frequentes

Does it rain a lot?

Yes! Puerto Varas receives 1,500-2,000mm of rain annually. Even in summer, rain is common. Pack full rain gear and waterproof your tent thoroughly. Clear days, when they come, are spectacular.

Can I climb Volcán Osorno?

Yes, guided ascents are available from the ski center. The climb requires crampons and ice axes (provided by guide companies). Camp at the base the night before for an early start.

Is it warm enough for lake swimming?

Lago Llanquihue is cold (12-18°C in summer) but swimmable on warm days, especially at sheltered beaches. The beach at Playa Hermosa is popular for brave swimmers.

How far are the Petrohué waterfalls?

About 65 km from Puerto Varas via the scenic lakeside road through Ensenada. The drive itself is gorgeous with volcano views. Park entry fee required.

Can I drive around the entire lake?

Yes! A complete circuit of Lago Llanquihue is about 180 km on good paved roads. It passes through Puerto Varas, Ensenada, Puerto Octay, and Frutillar — a perfect car camping day trip.
