Torres del Paine to El Calafate by Car: The Return Leg, Fuel and Timing

The road from Torres del Paine to El Calafate is the one you drove in, in reverse — Ruta 9 to Cerro Castillo, the Cancha Carrera / Río Turbio crossing, then Ruta 7 and Ruta 40 across the steppe. What changes is the plan: the last fuel in Chile comes early, the border you are leaving inspects food as strictly as the one you entered, Argentina issues you a fresh vehicle permit, and in winter the clock matters. Total: 340 km, 4.5–5.5 hours. A regular car or SUV is enough all year; the only gravel is the stretch between Cerro Castillo and the border.

1. Leave the park eastbound on Ruta 9.
2. Drive 80 km to Cerro Castillo (about 1 hour).
3. Fill the tank in Cerro Castillo. This is the essential stop of the day.
4. Continue 60 km to the Chilean border post at Cancha Carrera (45 minutes; gravel, then paved).
5. Cross: Chilean exit, then Argentine entry.
6. Drive 8 km to Río Turbio.
7. Follow Ruta 7 and then Ruta 40 north for 180 km to El Calafate (about 2 hours).

After Cerro Castillo there is no fuel for 240 km — the next station is in Río Turbio, and most drivers skip it and go straight through to El Calafate, 320 km from Cerro Castillo. From Cerro Castillo to El Calafate expect to use roughly 26–28 litres in a compact car, 32–35 in an SUV and 42–45 in a large 4WD. So: fill to 100% in Cerro Castillo, cross, and either drive straight to El Calafate or stop in Río Turbio for a break (its fuel costs more than El Calafate's).

The Cancha Carrera crossing works the same way in both directions, with three differences worth knowing:

• Argentina's agricultural inspection is usually quicker than Chile's and confiscates less — but you must still declare every food item, and fresh produce and meat remain prohibited. The vehicle check is as thorough as ever.
• Papers change hands. You return the Chilean temporary vehicle-import slip you received on entering Chile; Argentina then issues a new CDI (Código de Identificación) for the car. Keep it with the rental contract — you will need it to exit Argentina.
• The queue is different. Tour buses cluster at Cancha Carrera mid-morning; arriving by 8:30–9:30 keeps you ahead of them.

The documents themselves are unchanged from the outbound leg: passport, rental contract, the notarized authorization (Poder Notarial), the car's registration, insurance valid in both countries and your licence. See Border Crossing Permits for Rental Cars if any of those is missing.

Leave the park at 7:00–8:00. You reach the border around 8:30–9:30, before the bus rush, and El Calafate by 13:00–14:00 with the afternoon free. A 14:00 departure still works in summer — border by 15:30, El Calafate by 18:30–19:30 — but leaves no margin.

Avoid leaving after 15:00. You risk reaching the border near closing time, and on the Argentine side you would be driving in the dark with no buffer for a delay.

By season:

• Summer (December–February): the border closes at 23:00 and daylight is long; a 14:00 departure is safe.
• Winter (May–September): the border closes at 20:00 and it is dark by 17:00–18:00. Leave by 11:00. Later than that, a slow crossing means arriving in El Calafate in the dark; not recommended unless you are used to winter driving.

Chile's SAG confiscates fresh food on the way out as strictly as Argentina's SENASA does on the way in. Eat breakfast in the park or in Puerto Natales, throw away all fresh food, and cross with sealed, packaged snacks only. Heading east you drive away from the mountains, so the leg is a little less dramatic than the way in — though the first 80 km to Cerro Castillo are still beautiful. The sun is behind you in the afternoon, which is poor for photographs; a morning departure gives better light. Guanacos come to the roadside in the afternoon and rheas are common on the open steppe: keep your speed down on the gravel and scan the verges, especially at dawn and dusk.
